Tooth Fillings

We are a mercury-free practice. Many people still have the older silver amalgam fillings in their mouths from past years. We use composite or resin filling materials which are bonded to the remaining tooth structure to restore small to medium size cavities. These materials have been around now for more than 30 years and have been improved with modern bonding agents and more durable ingredients to allow nice looking, tooth colored restorations. These restorations if placed carefully and appropriately make more natural-looking and durable restorations which can sometimes blend with the enamel so they appear natural.

Disadvantages of Silver fillings:

Silver amalgam fillings have many drawbacks. The edges of these fillings often wear down and start to chip away over time which can cause weakness, recurrent decay, and breakage. Over time these Amalgam fillings tend to have expansion and contraction cycles which tend to weaken tooth cusps and predispose the teeth to cusp fracture. These fillings also tend to stain and/or corrode over time and the dark lines can show through the enamel and the ridges between teeth. It is usually possible to replace the amalgam fillings with composite resin tooth colored restorations.
